SSL-certificate is an important site or server hosting identification method that lets your visitor or user know he can trust the service. Besides acting as identification method it also enables securing the network transfers. It enables https communication to encrypt all transferred data and let you handle data you could not let anybody else to see. That kind of data can be for example personal identification data, bank data or credit card numbers and these should never be transferred over regular http connection.

You can select a root certificate that protects domain root plus one selected subdomain or you can select wildcard certificate to protect root domain and all subdomains. For serious use there are also EV-certificates that are much like wildcard ones but require much deeper identification of the buyer.
